IoT‐Based Security System for Smart Homes

By Carolin Gohlke

Various Internet of Things (IoT)‐based Security Systems are already on the market, but existing systems have disadvantages. These include high costs, a wealth of unused functions integrated, user‐unfriendly design that does not always allow new features and devices to be added or the system to be controlled from a smartphone. Hence, this study deals with the set‐up of an IoT‐based Security System that provides protection against unauthorised human access and smoke development in Smart Homes. The aim of this study is to develop a low‐cost and user‐friendly Security System that includes the most important components for fire and burglary prevention.Besides the description of the hardware and software components, it will be shown how the programming of the Arduino‐based system was carried out. The developed system is able to communicate with the user via an internet connection using Telegram. The user has the possibility to switch the system on and off and to receive notifications about smoke development or images of intruders. Finally, limitations and future working possibilities of the system are discussed.
